What does a lifting belt actually do?
A belt gives your abdominal wall something rigid to brace against, letting you generate higher intra-abdominal pressure and stiffen your trunk under load. It does not hold your spine in place or take weight off your back — it makes your own bracing more effective. Research has measured intra-abdominal pressure 25–40% higher when belted during heavy squats, and faster concentric speed at near-maximal loads.
Should you buy 10 mm or 13 mm?
| 10 mm | 13 mm | |
|---|---|---|
| Stiffness | Firm, with a little give | Maximum — almost no give |
| Best for | Mixed training, Olympic lifts, higher reps | Near-maximal squats and deadlifts |
| Break-in period | Roughly 2–4 weeks | Roughly 4–8 weeks |
| Shorter torsos | Conforms more easily | Can dig into ribs and hips |
| Competition legal | Yes | Yes — 13 mm is the maximum allowed |
13 mm is not better, it is stiffer and less forgiving. If you also do front squats, cleans or higher-rep work, 10 mm is usually the smarter buy.
How do you size a lifting belt?
Measure around your bare waist at navel level, tape parallel to the floor, standing relaxed and breathing normally. Order against that number, not your trouser size — a belt sits higher than trousers, so the correct belt size is typically 3–6 inches larger than your jeans. Someone in 32-inch jeans commonly measures 36–38 inches at the navel. Ordering by trouser size is the single most common reason lifters end up with an unusable belt.

Frequently asked questions
Are Muscleape belts legal for powerlifting competition?
Dimensionally yes — 10 cm wide, 10 mm or 13 mm thick, with a permitted lever buckle. IPF-sanctioned meets additionally require the brand to be on the federation's approved equipment list, so check the rulebook of your specific competition.
Lever or prong?
A lever gives identical tightness every rep and opens with one flick, but needs a screwdriver to reposition if your waist changes. A prong is instantly adjustable between lifts. If you are bulking or cutting, a prong is more forgiving; if your weight is stable, a lever is faster and tighter.
Why is a new leather belt so stiff?
That is what you paid for. Full-grain leather at 10–13 mm takes 4–8 weeks of use to conform to your torso. A belt that feels soft on day one is usually lower-grade leather that will not stay rigid.
What if the size is wrong?
Every order has 30 days for a no-questions-asked refund and Muscleape pays the return pickup, so an exchange costs you nothing but time. Email support@muscleape.in with your navel measurement if you are between sizes.
