Muscleape makes liquid chalk in 70 ml, 120 ml, 200 ml, 500 ml and 1000 ml, plus loose gym chalk powder. Both are magnesium carbonate, which absorbs sweat and raises friction between hand and bar. Liquid chalk suspends it in alcohol — the alcohol evaporates in 10–20 seconds leaving a thin bonded layer that holds for several sets with virtually no dust, which is why most Indian commercial gyms allow it even when they ban the powder. Liquid or powder — which should you buy?
| Liquid chalk | Powder chalk | |
|---|---|---|
| Peak grip | Very good | Best |
| Dust | Almost none | Significant |
| Allowed in most commercial gyms | Usually yes | Often banned |
| Duration per application | Several sets | One to two sets |
| Top up mid-set | Not practical | Instant |
| Skin dryness | Higher — alcohol content | Lower |
| Best for | Commercial gyms, travel, climbing, calisthenics | Home gyms, meets, strongman |
Why do gyms ban chalk?
Because of dust, not grip. Airborne magnesium carbonate settles on floors, mirrors and upholstery and works into machine bearings and cable housings, which costs real staff time to clean. Liquid chalk produces essentially none of that. If your gym has a blanket “no chalk” sign, it is worth asking specifically about the liquid form — the rule was almost certainly written about powder.
How much do you use, and how long does it last?
A pea-sized amount rubbed over both palms and fingers is a full application, and it typically holds through several sets. Let it dry fully — 10 to 20 seconds — before touching the bar; gripping while it is still wet smears it and wastes it. If your hands feel slick rather than dry, you used too much.
Which size should you buy?
- 70 ml / 120 ml cream — travel and gym-bag size.
- 200 ml — a single lifter training a few times a week.
- 500 ml — better value per millilitre; the size most regular lifters and home gyms settle on.
- 1000 ml — lowest cost per use, for gyms, training groups and daily users. Decant into a smaller bottle for the floor.

Frequently asked questions
Is liquid chalk better than powder chalk?
Neither is better outright. Powder gives the highest peak grip and can be topped up mid-set. Liquid gives nearly the same friction with almost no dust and lasts several sets, which is why most commercial gyms permit it.
Does liquid chalk dry out your hands?
More than powder, because of the alcohol base. Wash your hands after training, moisturise on rest days, and file calluses flat so they do not build into ridges that tear.
Is chalk allowed in competition?
Yes — magnesium carbonate chalk is standard permitted equipment in powerlifting, weightlifting, strongman and climbing. Grip resins and sticky sprays are treated differently and are often prohibited.
Do I need chalk or lifting straps?
Chalk if the bar is slipping because your hands are sweaty. Straps if your fingers are uncurling under a load your grip cannot hold.
