Product description

Muscleape Original Black Wrist Wraps are adjustable elastic wrist supports with a thumb loop and hook-and-loop closure, made to stop the wrist bending backwards under pressing loads. They are for bench press, overhead and push press, front squats, dips and heavy machine pressing — anywhere the bar is driving back into your palm. They do nothing for grip: if your hands are slipping you want chalk, and if your fingers are opening you want lifting straps.

How do you wrap your wrists properly?

  1. Slip the thumb loop over your thumb to hold the wrap in place while you start.
  2. Begin the first turn across the wrist joint itself, roughly half above and half below the joint line — not up the forearm, which is the most common mistake.
  3. Wrap in a spiral with firm, even tension, overlapping each layer.
  4. Secure the closure and take the thumb loop off your thumb before you lift — it is a positioning aid, not a load-bearing part.
  5. Loosen between sets. Leaving stiff wraps cinched all session restricts circulation and stops the wrist doing any work of its own.

Wraps or straps — which do you need?

Wrist wraps support the wrist joint when you are pressing. Lifting straps tie your hands to the bar when you are pulling. The similar names cause a lot of wrong purchases. Our wraps vs straps guide walks through which one your problem actually calls for.

Care

  • Hand wash with mild detergent and air dry — heat degrades the elastic and the velcro.
  • Close the velcro before washing so it does not pick up lint and lose grip.
  • Do not store damp in a closed gym bag.

Frequently asked questions

Are wrist wraps the same as lifting straps?

No. Wrist wraps stabilise the wrist joint for pressing. Lifting straps attach your hands to the bar for pulling. They solve opposite problems, and the names are the reason people buy the wrong one.

Should I wear the thumb loop while lifting?

No. The thumb loop holds the wrap in position while you apply it. Take it off your thumb before the set, or it pulls on the joint under load.

How tight should wrist wraps be?

Firm enough that the wrist cannot bend backwards under the bar, but not so tight that your hand tingles or changes colour. Wrap firmly for a top set and loosen between sets.

Can I use wrist wraps for deadlifts?

You can, but they do very little — the deadlift loads your grip, not your wrist in extension. Use chalk if the bar is slipping, or straps if your fingers are opening.

Are wrist wraps allowed in powerlifting competition?

Yes, within limits. Under IPF technical rules wrist wraps may not exceed 1 m in length and 8 cm in width. Lifting straps are not permitted in competition at all.

FAQ

What are Muscleape Wrist Wraps used for?

Muscleape Wrist Wraps are used to support wrist stability during gym workouts, weightlifting, bench press, overhead press and other heavy pressing movements.

Are wrist wraps good for bench press?

Yes, wrist wraps are commonly used during bench press to help keep the wrists supported and stable under heavier loads.

Can beginners use wrist wraps?

Yes, beginners can use wrist wraps during pressing exercises, but they should also focus on proper form, wrist position and progressive training.

How tight should wrist wraps be?

They should feel firm and supportive, but not so tight that they cause numbness, tingling or discomfort.

Do wrist wraps improve grip?

Wrist wraps mainly support the wrist joint. For grip support during pulling exercises, lifting straps are usually more suitable.

  • Loosen or remove between sets if discomfort occurs.
  • Air dry after training to reduce sweat build-up and odor.
  • Hand wash gently when needed and avoid harsh detergents.
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Important: Wrist wraps are training support accessories, not medical braces. If you have wrist pain or injury, consult a healthcare professional before use.
